George Seferis

George Seferiadis was born in Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) in 1900. Seferis is the name he adopted when he published his first book of poetry in 1931. After completing his schooling in Athens, Seferis studied Law at the Sorbonne, Paris. In 1926 he entered his country's diplomatic service, embarking on a career that took in England, Albania, the Middle East, South Africa, and Cyprus, during some of the most turbulent years of the century. Seferis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1963 and died in Athens in 1971.

Ghiorgos Seferis, nato nel 1900 a Smirne (oggi İzmir) in Asia Minore, si trasferì ad Atene durante l’adolescenza. Dopo aver completato gli studi a Parigi e Londra, abbracciò la carriera diplomatica, che percorse fino ai gradi più alti, compiendo numerosi viaggi in varie parti del mondo.Dedito alla poesia fin dalla prima giovinezza, fu insignito del premio Nobel per la Letteratura nel 1963. Morì ad Atene nel 1971.

Après avoir accompli ses études à Paris et à Londres, il poursuit une carrière diplomatique, qui lui donne accès à des postes les plus préstigieux et lui permet de faire plusieurs voyages dans le monde entier. Son œuvre comprend plusieurs recueils de poèmes, des essais, ainsi que des traductions des écrivains étrangers et un roman. Il a reçu le prix Nobel de littérature en 1963. Il meurt à Athènes en 1971.
